Super Cruise on Chevrolet Vehicles: Hands-Free Driving
Chevrolet is making it easier for you to navigate through the Dallas-FORT WORTH area and travel long distances on TX highways. The automaker’s Super Cruise™ technology is compatible on many major interstates in central TX, including I-30, I-20, I-820, and US-287. Here is how this Chevy feature allows you to drive hands-free on compatible roads.
How does Super Cruise work?
Chevrolet models that have the Super Cruise system are equipped with strategically placed cameras and sensors across their exteriors. These are like the instruments in Chevrolet Safety Assist that alert you of a vehicle in your blind spot, when you drift over the lane lines, or when you approach a vehicle too closely.
Super Cruise activates all of these individual safety features simultaneously. It uses this real-time data to control your vehicle’s movement to keep it centered in its lane, adjust its speed based on surrounding traffic, and brake or swerve when needed to avoid collisions with obstacles.
Super Cruise also uses pre-mapped information on the road to anticipate its curves, speed limits, and other characteristics. Its GPS function and highly detailed map data lets the car know where its precise location is at every moment.
When can you activate Super Cruise?
Unlike individual Chevrolet Safety Assist features like Adaptive Cruise Control or Lane Keep Assist that can be activated at any time, Super Cruise can only be used on compatible roads that have already been scanned into the system’s map database.
Currently, there are over 200,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada, with more being added on a regular basis. Some newer Chevy models have as many as 400,000 available miles of roads that you can use Super Cruise on.
The automaker cautions against using Super Cruise when the roads are wet from rain, when the lanes aren’t marked clearly, if there is construction around, or when you’re on the shoulder, exit lane, or merge lane. You also need to keep your car washed regularly to keep the sensors clean from dirt.
How to activate Super Cruise on your Chevy
Activating Super Cruise is easy. All you need to do is follow these three steps on your vehicle:
- Activate Adaptive Cruise Control
- If you’re on a compatible road, the Super Cruise icon will appear on the driver display
- Press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel
- Remove your hands from the wheel when the display turns green
- Disengage Super Cruise by pressing the brake or tapping the button again
The process is a lot like how you activate and deactivate a cruise control system — but Super Cruise is far more advanced and able to practically drive the car itself for you.
Super Cruise relies on a Driver Attention System to ensure your eyes are still on the road even when Super Cruise is activated. The sensors and self-driving functions aren’t replacements for your awareness as the driver; you’re still responsible for interceding in hazardous situations and being ready to retake the wheel when necessary.
Why do you need Super Cruise on your next Chevy?
Hands-free driving makes mundane drives like commuting to work, taking the children to school, and heading far away to Houston or Austin. It takes the pressure off of you as the driver for a short period, letting you take a breather and relax your grip on the wheel.
Nobody likes getting stuck in stop-and-go rush-hour traffic; that’s why Super Cruise is convenient. It takes over the tedium of accelerating, braking, and changing lanes thanks to Automatic Lane Change. The sensors also help keep extra attention on your vicinity that you may miss if you’re distracted.
Which vehicles have Super Cruise?
As of summer 2023, Chevrolet offers Super Cruise as an optional feature on higher trim levels of the newest Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and Bolt EUV production models. The automaker is also prioritizing giving its electric vehicles Super Cruise technology so owners of the Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV will have this cutting-edge system.
You also need a Super Cruise Connected Services plan; a trial period comes included on new vehicle purchases, but you will need to pay for additional time after that to enjoy Super Cruise.
You can buy or lease any of these vehicles at #BRUCE# in FORT WORTH, TX. Talk to our staff about how you can take home a new vehicle with Super Cruise technology in it.
