2024 Chevrolet Suburban vs. Tahoe

Everything is bigger here in TX – and that includes the SUVs! Families in FORT WORTH need a true sport utility vehicle that has strong truck-like capabilities yet can seat 6-8 passengers. The Tahoe and the Suburban are the two biggest Chevrolet SUVs, and both are for sale at Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet. Which three-row SUV is better-suited to your large Texan family: the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe or the 2024 Suburban? Here are their biggest differences.

The Suburban and Tahoe share the same underpinnings

The 2024 Suburban and Tahoe are both full-size, three-row SUVs that share the same platform: the GMT1XX, which is also the foundation of the Silverado pickup. In fact, Chevrolet manufactures these vehicles right here in TX at the General Motors Arlington Assembly plant. So, you can trust that both SUVs are truly American-made for Americans like you.

These similar body-on-frame SUVs share identical equipment. Both are powered by a standard 5.3-liter V8 engine, with a 6.2-liter or a Duramax® Turbo Diesel as alternatives. They’re regulated by the same 10-speed automatic transmission and ride on the same 18-inch wheels, with options up to 22 inches. Both have standard 2WD and optional 4WD for improved off-road fitness.

Differences in trim levels and prices

The 2024 Tahoe and Suburban share the same trim level configurations, with corresponding features on the LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country versions. The only difference is that the Tahoe offers a Performance Edition version of its RST trim, which the Suburban does not. The 2024 Tahoe RST Performance Edition has a Police Pursuit Vehicle chassis and suspension, blacked-out wheels, police-spec tires, and boosted horsepower output.

These two full-size SUVs are priced very comparably; an entry-level 2024 Suburban LS costs only $3,000 more than a base-model Tahoe LS based on MSRP.^[1] That marginal price difference extends all the way to both SUVs’ top-of-the-line High Country trim levels, which only have a $3,000 price difference, too. So, cost isn’t a major difference between these two SUVs at Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet.

The Suburban has a larger third row for bigger passengers

The passengers in the first and second rows won’t notice a difference in seating space between the two SUVs; both offer the same head room, legroom, and shoulder room in their respective rows.

However, anyone riding in the third row will definitely notice that the 2024 Suburban is bigger than the 2024 Tahoe. That’s because they get an extra 2 inches of legroom and 1 inch of shoulder room in the furthest row. This expansion can be worthwhile if you have large teenagers or frequent adult guests.

You can fit more cargo in the Chevy Suburban

Behind the third row of the Tahoe is only 25.5 cubic feet of space for your luggage. However, the Suburban expands that area to 41.5 cubic feet. In total, there’s 22 more cubic feet of total cargo volume when measuring from both SUVs’ front rows. This gives the 2024 Suburban best-in-class maximum cargo volume.

The main difference between the Tahoe and Suburban: Their lengths

The reason the 2024 Chevy Suburban offers more cargo space and third-row seating space is because the Suburban is 14 inches longer than the Tahoe: 225.7 vs. 210.7 inches. Otherwise, the SUVs have identical height, width, and ground clearance measurements. Essentially, the 2024 Chevrolet Suburban is an extended-length Tahoe.

Chevrolet engineers made a wise design alteration to the Suburban to accommodate this length extension. They gave the Suburban a one-foot-longer wheelbase than the Tahoe: 134.1 vs. 120.9 inches. This spreads the axles further apart so the Suburban remains balanced when cornering – rather than being lopsided by simply extending the rear overhang.

Minor fuel economy and capability differences

The extra mass of the Suburban makes the large SUV a tad heavier than the 2024 Chevy Tahoe. The 2024 Suburban has a curb weight that’s almost 150 pounds heavier and a higher GVWR by 100 pounds. There’s also a 28-gallon fuel tank on the Suburban, which is 4 gallons bigger than the Tahoe’s 24-gallon tank, letting you travel further on full tank.

Being a tad lighter in weight, the Tahoe can use more of its torque for towing. The result is 8,400 pounds maximum available trailering on the 2024 Tahoe, versus 8,300 pounds on the Suburban.

Still, the EPA estimates that you’ll only notice a marginal in fuel economy on the larger, heavier Suburban. Both 2024 4WD models received the same rating on the highway (15 mpg), and the 4WD Tahoe is 1 mpg more efficient in city driving (20 vs. 19 mpg).^[2] That same marginal difference is present with the 6.2-liter V8 and Duramax® engines, too.
